Optimizing RPL Routing By A Multi-Metric Combination

Abstract

The development of low power and lossy networks (LLN) led the IETF in 2012 to specify the Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy Networks (RPL) to meet the needs of routing constraints of these networks. The performance of the RPL protocol is influenced by the choice of routing metrics. However, its objective function by default, the MRHOF function, is based solely on the ETX metric (indicator of the reliability of the link) to establish the paths without taking into account the energy level of the network nodes; which greatly affects the energy consumption of the nodes of the network, thus leading to a reduction in the lifetime of the network. To solve this problem, we propose the objective function ADDITIVE-OF which relies on an additive combination of the ETX metric and the energy metric. Analysis of the simulation results shows that the ADDITIVE-OF function, compared to the MRHOF function, optimizes power consumption as well as the rate of packet delivery in the network.
