Abstract

Fluid flow over rotating elliptical objects can be seen in various applications like turbine rotor blade, marine offshore structures and energy conservation systems etc. In literature, very few results are avilable concerning the rotating elliptical cylinder. Present work aims to study the effects of Reynolds and Prandtl number on heat transfer from a rotaiong elliptic cylinder in laminar flow regime. We consider a uniform flow of Newtonian fluid (U_∞,T_∞ ) is approaching to a heated and rotating elliptical cylinder. The cylinder temperature is maintained same at T_w and speed of rotation is same at all instants of time. The governing mass, momentum and energy conservation equations are numerically solved using FLUENT (ANSYS 15). The computational geometry and mesh are prepared using design modeler of ANSYS workbench. In order to capture the transient behavior of the flow due to the rotation of the elliptic cylinder, the sliding mesh method is implemented. The governing equations are solved using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach. The validation is done by comparing present results for rotating circular and elliptical cylinder with existing literature. Present results are matching well with the literature. In the present work we have investigated the effect of the Prandtl number (0.7≤Pr≤100) and Reynolds number (1≤Re≤40) on isotherms and Nusselt Number (Nu) local and surface average both. Isotherm patterns around the cylinder for Pr=1and 100 at Re=40 when the cylinder orientation is normal to the bulk flow direction. On increase in Pr and Re, gap between the isotherms decreases and they cluster around the cylinder. The variation of time-averaged and surface averaged Nusselt number with Prandtl and Reynolds number is also shown. Local and surface averaged Nusselt number increases with both Pr and Re.

Keyphrases: Elliptic Cylinder, Nusselt number, Prandtl number, Rotating elliptic cylinder, heat transfer
