Abstract

The global prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has been on the rise over the last four decades and is expected to rise further. International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates the global prevalence of diabetes to be 425 million. The co-morbidities and mortalities associated with T2DM are also on the rise. World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends the use of advanced technologies to effectively manage T2DM so that the patient's quality of life could be improved, associated mortalities and morbidity could be reduced. Big Data applications are used in the healthcare for patient care.  Big Data applications like visualisation, prescriptive & predictive  analytics, and decision analytics in the management of chronic disease conditions such as T2DM. Researchers have studied the adoption of technologies including Big Data Analytics in various contexts using technology adoption frameworks in the information systems (IS) domain, where the usability of technology is just viewed as one factor. Most of the research that used technology adoption models in the IS domain has indicated that usability has a significant influence on the adoption of a technology. However, it appears that there are limited attempts  to study the factors influencing the usability of big data applications for the management of T2DM. Since usability not only a factor that impacts the adoption of a technology, but also determines the outcomes of the management process, there is a need to understand the factors that influence the usability of a big data analytics application for the management of T2DM. The literature review also highlights that there is a need to understand how the characteristics of big data such as volume, velocity, variety, and veracity impact factors affecting usability. Hence, this research focuses on the impact of big data characteristics on the factors that influence the usability of the big data analytics application in the management of T2DM.
