CAOS 2019: Editor's Preface

About the volume:

This volume contains the papers presented at CAOS 2019: The 19th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery held on June 19-22, 2019 in New York.

There were 170 submissions.  Each submission was reviewed by four program committee members, two of whom clinical and two with a technical background. Authors of 104 of these opted into this open access pilot.

About the conference:

This meeting marked the Silver 25th year Jubilee Anniversary of the founding of our Society. Several events were planned to commemorate its origin, reflect on its past and current achievements, and plan the future promises of CAOS international. Our professional field has been reinvigorated in the last years by the explosive development of robotics and sensor technology. The conference aimed to capture the essence of the current trends and scientific progress to provide experts and newcomers with a clear synthesis of state-of-the-art information.  The keynote speakers were recognized leaders, whose work has inspired and galvanized ongoing research in the technological contribution to orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine.

From an original historical focus on Computer Assisted Navigation, the Society has set out to expand its mandate to include the essential fields of advanced medical imaging, mathematical modeling, individual biometrics of gait and soft tissue characteristics, and peri-operative objective functional outcomes. The astounding progress in robotics and sensors was presented by champions and debated by traditionalists. Pre-conference workshops provided a dynamic and interactive opportunity to explore emerging, promising, or controversial subject matters such as Same Day Surgery and privacy of functional monitoring. In addition, the critical role of economics of advanced technology research and development was the topic of expert panel debates. Ultimately, CAOS 2019 was an expansive dive into the past, present and future of advanced technology in orthopaedics.
