OMNeT 2018: Editor's Preface

The 5th OMNeT++ Community Summit was held from 05-07 September 2018 at the University of Pisa, Italy. The objective of the Summit is to provide an opportunity for the developers and users of the OMNeT++ simulator and its frameworks to present their work.

The technical program consisted of five sessions dedicated to different themes based on the submissions made. The sessions and their focus were as follows:

  • OMNeT++ and INET Extensions session consisted of work done to extend the functionality of the OMNeT++ simulator and the widely used INET framework.
  • Wireless Communication Networks session included work done by researchers on the SimuLTE framework for Multi-access Edge Computing and Multi-link Communications in Aeronautical Networks.
  • Industrial Applications and Deterministic Networks session was dedicated to work on Time Sensitive Networking and models implementing Clock Synchronization using the IEEE 802.1AS gPTP standard.
  • Information Centric and Vehicular Networking session contained work on a framework for Named Data Networking and Fog Communications for Vehicular Networks.
  • Analysis, Evaluation and Statistics with OMNeT++ in Practice and Teaching session was dedicated to work on using OMNeT++ and the INET framework for teaching and statistical methodologies.

The papers were reviewed by an international technical committee and each of the papers received at least 3 reviews.

The Summit has the character of a social get-together, where the core developers of OMNeT++ and the community using and extending OMNeT++, uses the opportunity not only to share their work, but also to obtain valuable feedback and make plans for collaborations. The work presented at the Summit are made available in this publication. We thank the participants, the reviewers and the organizers for making the 5th OMNeT++ Community Summit a great success.
